- South Korea – the surprise in 2002
|
South Korea was the surprise of the whole tournament during the last World Cup. The co-hosts fought their way forward into the semi-final during their sixth participation in the World Cup, before Michael Ballack and his goal destroyed the dream of entering the final match.
After the major success during the last World Cup with 4th place, the Asians are hoping to make progress in 2006 too. The Bensberg palace grand hotel (Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg) is also relying on this too, since that is where the Asian dual champions will be residing throughout their entire stay in Germany. This makes Bergisch Gladbach and the Rheinisch-Bergisch district almost the centre point of the world championships – no other town will be the host to two national teams during the tournament. In addition to the team from South Korea, Brazil has also chosen the principal town of the district as its base. Consequently, Bergisch Gladbach will be fully justified in bearing the title "FIFA World Cup quarters".
At the Bensberg palace grand hotel, the team from the Far East will find the best possible conditions in order to prepare for the arduous title bouts. In addition to the luxurious setting, the cuisine of 3-star chef Joachim Wissler will ensure pleasure and strength. The South Koreans will be taking up position in their training ground in the Bay Arena in Leverkusen. |
